How Rich.
What’s with all the rich people hate
When we all want to be lottery winners
Sneering at their nice cars and flashy rings
Yet dream of when our boat comes in
We eat up the celebrity circuit
With their style, hair and Pilates bodies
They don’t deserve it
No matter: grateful or humble
Whether born into it or earned from nothing
Hate them anyway
By the way they dress
The car they drive
The hair they wear
We’re all just hypocrites
We don’t care
It’s not right unless it’s happening to us
We want our cut
We sum them up extrinsically
We make a big fuss
We judge them
Just as they do us

I actually never will get why the majority of people are like this. Not only am I NOTHING like that, but I could care less about owning much. I love hearing about positive, happy people and lives. I’m way more interested in people pursuing passionate careers, loving close relationships, spiritual living, etc. And am very sad when people go through hardships. I just feel like there’s something wrong with how people are, yet at the same time I try not to dwell on it because that’s negative and judgmental as well.
You summed it up well.

I can understand your frustration.
I try to live by the idea that money doesn’t define anyone, good or bad. It also helps me become more tolerant of people on both ends of the spectrum.
July 30th, 2009 at 5:50 pmI’ll admit, I like the thought of having things. But I don’t let it get in the way of my relationships with people. It seems to me like a lot of people always either want something they can’t have, or otherwise look down on people who don’t have as much as they have.
I don’t believe everyone is like this though. I have associated in the past 10 years with very many affluent people, but they are also some of the humblest people I’ve met. They have nice homes, but they cherish their families. They have nice things, but they prefer the ability those things give them to serve others and spend time with loved ones.
I think the intro to Love, Actually applies not only to love, but to goodness in general. We just focus on the bad a lot more than the good.

Wow, very interesting. It’s funny how much emphasis people put in things and “stuff”. It becomes an obsession. And when we don’t have what others have, we hate them. But speaking from my perspective, one thing that can change a person in an instant is…pain. Pain changes everything. I could care less about materialistic riches. I just care about a life with meaning that includes real human substance and love.

Many people have conflicting beliefs about money. I’ve never understood that. Money isn’t everything, but it’s not nothing. It’s somewhere in the middle.
It doesn’t make someone good or bad, it’s just a resource.

Bob,
Like you, I’ve had a lot of experience around affluence. I concur, most are like everyone else just in nicer shoes.
Dayne,
Yea, people are people. We all get hurt sometimes. Even the rich.
(that’s a hot name btw.)
Hunter,
…just a resource. Well put.
